Youth Mental Health First Aid - Virtual Training

Cost: Free

Participants MUST first complete two-hour online, self-paced pre-work before attending the virtual session via ZOOM on November 9. Participants will receive links to both the self-paced sessions and following virtual session.

What is Youth Mental Health First Aid?

Youth Mental Health First Aid is designed to teach parents, family members, caregivers, teachers, school staff, peers, neighbors, health and human services workers, and other caring citizens how to help an adolescent (age 12-18) who is experiencing a mental health or addictions challenge, or is in crisis.

The course introduces common mental health challenges for youth, reviews typical adolescent development, and teaches a 5-step action plan for how to help young people in both crisis and non-crisis situations. Topics covered include anxiety, depression, substance use, disorders in which psychosis may occur, disruptive behavior disorders (including AD/HD), and eating disorders.

Please note this class may be too basic for those who work in mental health services.

M Health Fairview, Community Health and Innovation

M Health Fairview offers Mental Health First Aid in Minnesota through a partnership with the National Council of Behavioral Health. This partnership requires that each entity is responsible for different components of the delivery of Mental Health First Aid to the community.

M Health Fairview:

• Schedules, promotes, and delivers the program to the community throughout our 10 hospital service areas

• Manages the initial participant registration process

• Communicates with participants about: class procedures, reminders, and post-training follow-up

• Covers participant registration fees

National Council of Behavioral Health (owner of program in USA)

• Develops and distributes curriculum

• Trains and certifies instructors

• Manages all delivery methods and program standards (including: the Cornerstone Learning Management System pre-work, registration, class procedures, and resources)

• Controls the administration of Zoom meetings

• Communicates with participants about: setting Learning Management System (LMS) account, class procedures, reminders, and training follow-up
